about

Mirabilis - the collaborative neo-classical/heavenly voices duo Summer Bowman of The Machine in the Garden and Dru Allen of This Ascension - return with Sub Rosa, the brilliant follow-up to their 2004 debut, Pleiades. The new album mixes classical sensibilities with exotic electronics and acoustic instrumentation to complement the vocal depth listeners are familiar with from Dru and Summer. The vocals are supported with a melancholic arrangement of flute, hammered dulcimer, and live percussion mixing with multi-layered vocal stylings to invoke a range of emotional textures.

Sub Rosa is a Latin term meaning secrecy, literally translating to "under the rose." The rose in ancient times was a symbol of sworn confidence of participants at a meeting. Mirabilis uses these connotations to refer to the subtleties and new layers explored on this release. These unseen, uncharted territories explored on Sub Rosa will draw listeners in to a new musical journey.

Track Name: World Indifferent
I look out at landscape unknown to me
Aloft feelings it seems once were mine
Unfurling to penetrate memory
It's only time
Sun ceases warming, it warns me, but I came

I came for you
Each in our hearts alone
But fighting the way

You try me doubtless in your way
So sure the pieces
You hold, so tell me
Am I alone?

Sorting through layers it's cloudy
Hot ice and strange wondrous snow
Impressions sculptured ephemeral
Of what I know

I came for you
Each in our hearts alone
But fighting the way

At odds with myself you and I
Our very nature fleeting
Fractured and reeling
Restore my own

I look at a landscape unknown to me
Aloft feelings it seems once were mine
Unfurling to penetrate memory
It's only time
Sun ceases warming, it warns me, but I came

I came for you
Each in our hearts alone
But finding the way

At odds with myself you and I
Our very nature fleeting
Fractured and reeling
Restore my own

You try me doubtless in your way
So sure the pieces
You hold, so tell me
Am I alone?
Track Name: The Journey
Sleep, sleep
Go to sleep
Soon you'll be on your journey

Crimson rose
Dances and floats
Up upon the waves

Gale force blows
Memories in tow
Mingling with the rain

Crimson rose
Horizon she goes
Towards the sun, towards hope

Yet hope remains
So far and away
Lost in the hurricane
Track Name: The Vastness
In the far off deep
In swirling shoals of blackness
Glide beyond the breeze
On swirling shoals of vastness
Tears in sand, unknown location

Don't sway-don't
Life bound to the sea

In the tidal swell
Of swirling shoals of blackness
Taken by the breeze
Into swirling shoals of vastness
Tears in sand, unknown location

Don't sway-don't
Life belongs to the sea
Track Name: The Flowers Pressed Down
The flowers pressed down
Fragrant waves are floating
Ashes fall into the ground
Silent tears are forming
Look into the sky
A brilliant sun is shining
Takes away all meaning
I can't fathom desolation
Unable to take in the absence
Fate's servant turning wheels
The spirits lift from the ground
Burning embers all around
Life carries on
Track Name: Aubade
Rise in my heartbeat
And rush in my blood
My lips, they quake
I shiver awake

I know this can't be
Yet I want this
I need to release

I once sang
I've listened
I've waited for one
That I remember

How wondrous,
How long lonely?
Now time passes
And time closes

I'm biding my time
Track Name: A Ballade of the Centre
When all the shores of knowledge fade
Beyond the realms of night and day,
When the quick stir of thought is stayed
And, as a dream of yesterday,
The bonds of striving fall away:
There dawns sometimes a point of fire
Burning the utter dark, that may
Fulfill our desperate desire.

Into the darkness, unafraid,
Wherein soft hands of silence lay
Their veil of peace upon the blade
Of too bright thought, we take our way.
In changing of desire we pay
Whatever price the gods require,
Knowing the end is theirs — and they
Fulfill our desperate desire.
Track Name: Farce
What's the matter with the way life is?
Why's the show going on?
We're all in a mockery
When the night is over

And they all listen intently
We dance and smile for all
We're the nightly tragedy
Our own absurdity

Ha ha ha!
Track Name: Sub Rosa
Starlight is fading
Gone the sun
From summer now
I'm feeling it
A turn inward, a word
Still the sound
Honored song, hidden son
Fools say they know-no!
Underneath the ice and snow
My reign I deign domain beware and go
Else meet me beneath the rose
